Trained for the real demands of the route

A school bus driver manages the safety of dozens of lives while handling traffic, weather, student behavior and tight schedules. Our training program is built around that reality.

Before the first route

Safe transportation starts before a driver ever gets behind the wheel. Summit and its operating entities’ Driver Training & Certification Program prepares drivers to operate school buses safely, confidently, and responsibly.

Training combines classroom instruction, behind-the-wheel experience, and federally required Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) to ensure drivers meet all regulatory standards and are fully prepared for real-world conditions.

Drivers are trained in:

  • Defensive driving and hazard awareness
  • Vehicle inspection and safety procedures
  • Passenger management and student safety
  • Emergency response and accident protocols
  • Federal and state transportation regulations

Behind-the-wheel training reinforces these skills through real driving scenarios, including maneuvering, highway driving, and hazard response with a certified trainer. Classroom training introduces the principles of safe school bus operation and prepares drivers for both written testing and real-world driving situations.

Drivers also receive specialized instruction in:

  • School bus safety systems and equipment
  • Accessibility and special needs transportation
  • Passenger safety and accountability

This structured approach helps ensure every driver is prepared to uphold Summit’s safety expectations from day one.

Continuous coaching powered by Catalyst and our training teams

Catalyst’s smart cameras and driver monitoring technology across 100% of our allowable fleet identify patterns such as hard braking and distracted behavior as they occur. Safety teams use that data for targeted coaching rather than waiting for an incident to trigger a review.

Drivers also participate in regular safety meetings, refresher training, and seasonal sessions for winter driving, back-to-school transitions and end-of-year procedures.
